Discover Vanderbilt University Medical Center:
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is a comprehensive health care facility dedicated to patient care, research, and biomedical education. The mission of VUMC is to advance health and wellness through preeminent programs in patient care, education, and research.
The Adult Emergency Room is the Level 1 Trauma Center for Middle Tennessee with 88 treatment areas including four trauma bays. We are one of the busiest emergency rooms in the country and see 69,000 patients annually. We have the ability to quickly diagnose through our use of two CT scanners and an x-ray machine for the Adult ER. We are a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Accredited Chest Pain Center, and the Designated Level 1 Burn Center for the region.
A typical shift for our nurses includes participating in a team shift report prior to receiving their primary assignment. We work within a pod environment with each nurse typically having a 4:1 patient/nurse ratio. Our department utilizes a team approach to perform primary nursing with the assistance of Paramedics, AEMTs and Care Partners. Our nurses encounter a diverse patient population every day, with assignments ranging from the acute and critically-ill to non-acute and fast track patients. Other assignments include trauma and triage. Our nurses have told us one of their favorite things about working in Vanderbilt's Adult ER is the opportunity to provide input on the care plan for their patients. They have said they feel valued for their expertise and operate at a respected level in care planning. They have the opportunity to work with some of the finest Emergency Medicine practitioners and educators in the world at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Our Emergency Medicine Chairman
Our Chairman of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Corey Slovis, is one of Emergency Medicine's most famous educators and routinely teaches at the largest gatherings of our specialty. He has won the American College of Emergency Physicians' Speaker of the Year Award and the Hal Jayne Award for Academic Excellence from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine . He was one of the first Vanderbilt faculty members to be named as a Master Clinical Teacher by the Dean and has been selected as Best Clinical Professor by the graduating medical school classes at every institution he has taught at, having won this award seven times in his career. Dr. Slovis has two teaching awards named after him: Vanderbilt's Corey M. Slovis Bedside Teaching Award and the Major Metropolitan EMS Medical Directors Consortium's Corey M. Slovis Award for Excellence in Education. Dr. Slovis was awarded again earlier this year with the following national award for Academic Leadership:
External candidates with one year of individual or combined nursing experience in an emergency room (ER) or intensive care unit (ICU)
Internal candidates with one year of experience in any specialty will be considered
BLS, ACLS, and PALS strongly preferred
TNCC, ATCN, CEN, CCRN, EMT and EMT-P are all highly desirable
Typically 36-hours per week, 12 hour shifts
All new nurses start on night shift and move to other shifts based on seniority
We offer self-scheduling through our software, VandyWorks
Nurses schedule themselves to work two weekend shifts (Saturday and Sunday nights) every third weekend. Holidays rotate in much the same way with three summer holidays and three winter holidays rotated.
